"Comforter" Paul Villinski 1994, Sculpture on Canvas, Smithsonian American Art Museum, NW Washingto
I selected "Comforter" because it introduces an important shift in the exhibition: the possibility of finding support after a period of personal struggle. Made from stitched cotton work gloves, the piece transforms ordinary objects into something that resembles a protective covering. I find the material suggests a human presence, while the act of stitching represents the patience and effort involved in rebuilding one’s life. I want this piece to remind viewers that healing doesn't have to happen in isolation, and that connection, trust, and small acts of care can help people begin to feel safe again.
